Mint tea and justice: a reflection on steadiness and hope

A personal reflection on small rituals, difficult work and holding onto humanity.

A small ritual can create a pause

Making mint tea can be simple and sensory: the scent of the leaves, the warmth of the glass and a few quiet minutes before returning to the day. Small rituals do not remove injustice or pain, but they can help us stay present enough to respond thoughtfully.

Staying human in difficult work

Work involving trauma, disability and child safety can bring us close to stories that are hard to carry. Steadiness does not mean becoming unaffected. It can mean recognising the impact, seeking supervision and support, and returning to the values that guide the work.

Hope with action

Hope is most useful when it is connected to action: believing people, protecting rights, strengthening safeguards and treating every person with dignity. Care for ourselves and care for justice do not have to compete; each can help sustain the other.
