Self-care and psychosocial disability: four realistic starting points

Practical ways to support wellbeing without turning self-care into another demand.

Self-care can be ordinary

Self-care is not a cure or a substitute for professional support. It can be a small act that protects energy, creates predictability or helps you reconnect with yourself and other people.

Four places to begin

  • Support your basics: food, hydration, sleep and medication routines where relevant
  • Create one calming cue, such as music, breathing, time outdoors or a familiar sensory activity
  • Stay connected with one safe person or community
  • Choose a small activity that offers meaning, pleasure or accomplishment

Adapt, do not abandon

On hard days, reduce the size of the step. Five minutes can count. Asking for support can count. Rest can count. If distress is persistent or worsening, speak with a trusted health professional or use an appropriate crisis service.
