NDIS
Understanding the three NDIS plan management options
A plain-language overview of self-management, plan management and NDIA management.
Three ways to manage funding
NDIS funding can be self-managed, plan-managed or NDIA-managed. A plan can also use a combination of these options. The best fit depends on the participant’s preferences, circumstances and the level of administration they want to handle.
At a glance
- Self-managed: the participant or nominee manages claims and provider payments
- Plan-managed: a registered plan manager pays providers and helps with financial administration
- NDIA-managed: providers claim through the NDIS portal and generally need to be registered for that support
Questions worth asking
Consider provider choice, record keeping, budgets, payment timing and how much day-to-day administration feels manageable. Management choices do not change a participant’s right to choice, control and clear service agreements.
Rules and individual plans change. Check the current NDIS guidance or speak with the NDIA, a plan manager or an appropriate adviser before making a decision.
